Celebrating Black Artists

Even as discrimination forced them to the margins of society, the contributions African Americans have made to the arts span generations. In the nineteenth century, Robert S. Duncanson excelled as a landscape painter, and the sculptures of Edmonia Lewis made her world famous. Some of the greatest jazz music today comes from Miles Davis, and some of the world's most read poetry was written by Langston Hughes. Filled with accessible text, colour photographs, and additional resources, students will learn about the contributions these trailblazers made and the challenges they overcame.
